Ask Us AnythingDoes SMP hurt?
Most clients describe it as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful — somewhere between a stippling sensation and a light scratch. We use topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable, and most people find sessions very manageable. Pain tolerance varies, but nobody has ever had to stop mid-session.
How long does SMP last?
SMP lasts 4-6 years before it starts to fade. After that a quick touch-up session restores the colour and definition. Unlike hair systems or topical solutions, there's nothing daily to manage — your SMP is there when you wake up, stays there when you shower, and doesn't fall off at the gym.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients need 2-3 sessions, spaced 10-14 days apart. Session one lays the foundation, session two adds density, and session three refines the blend. We take it slow on purpose — layering gradually is what makes the result look natural rather than painted on.
Will it look fake or like dots?
Not when it's done right. Natural-looking SMP depends on pigment choice, needle depth, dot spacing, and angle — all of which we map out before a single dot is placed. The final result mimics the appearance of a freshly shaved or closely trimmed head of hair and holds up under close inspection.
Is SMP the same as a hair tattoo?
Informally yes, technically no. Hair tattoos use standard tattoo ink and needles, which sit deeper in the skin and often turn blue or green over time. SMP uses specialised pigment and needles designed for the scalp, placed at the exact layer that fades to grey naturally. The tools matter.
Can SMP hide scars or transplant scars?
Yes. Scar camouflage is one of the most common requests we get — FUE dot scars, FUT strip scars, surgical scars, and burns. We work pigment into and around the scar tissue to blend it with the surrounding scalp, making the scar far less visible. Results depend on the scar itself, which we'll assess in consultation.
